Building Friendship We all need friends, and having a written correspondence with a deployed service member helps to foster friendship. What do I say to someone who I have almost no connection with? A word of encouragement can help give them the strength they need to carry on and complete the mission at hand.

To get started, read the guidelines below, then find a location nearest you on our Drop-off Location list so your notes of appreciated can be sent to our troops. But keep in mind: We recommend that you contact the location via phone or email to be sure they can accept your cards and letters.

Writing letters is a great tradition and becoming a pen pal to an American troop overseas is one of the many ways you can support our men and women in uniform. You leave your loved ones behind and are shipped to a faraway, unfamiliar location. You can also bring your letters to one of our local drop-off locations.

When building a friendship with an overseas servicemember, focus on what you can bring to the table. Asking too many personal details can be an invasion of privacy and may turn your pen pall off to letter writing.

Due to privacy and security, we do not distribute names or addresses of service members to anyone for any reason. It is our goal to see that our military — active, reserve, and veterans — receive these messages, whether they are serving at home, abroad, or are injured in hospitals.
